How to Combat the Signs of Aging
 

Aging is filled with myths that result in a stereotypical view of a little, old lady or man who can't see or hear. The fact of the matter is that many people age with grace and dignity and are even enjoying the aging process! Keep these tips in mind as you get older.

Frowning creates far more wrinkles than smiling. Although the effects would seem negligible, smiling can actually help a lot. If you find yourself frowning, give yourself a little pinch! You can eventually stop this bad habit.

You may think grabbing an afternoon cup of tea is only for old folks, but it actually works to help keep you young. Tea is incredibly rich in those, oh so useful, antioxidants which help protect our cells from aging. The practice of having a cup of tea is also a great stress reliever, so go ahead and sip away.

TIP! Don't get caught feeling and acting old! Spend time with children! Volunteer at a daycare or a church nursery where you can feel useful and engage in childish activities. Keep in touch with grandkids and have them visit often.

As you get older, your overall health depends on the friendships you maintain and nourish. Being active in your community has been shown to increase lifespan. For greater benefits from social interactions, focus on intimacy with the people you can trust.

Try new things and constantly keep an active mind. Keep your mind sharp so the phrase "older and wiser" really means something! Sign up for a class on a topic that sounds engaging at a local community college, senior center, or neighborhood recreational center. You could also learn a new language, instrument, do crossword puzzles or read new literature. Doing so will keep you mentally alert.

Destructive by-products, known as free radicals, are formed as your body turns food and oxygen into energy. Because antioxidants protect against these free radicals, they may help you deal with the effects of aging. Fruits, vegetables, and whole grains are sources of antioxidants. Blackberries, blueberries, spinach, and broccoli may also contain a higher amount of antioxidants.

TIP! There is no sense in worrying about your age or other numbers that seem to define you. Stop fretting about your age, height, and weight, and let your doctors worry about them if need be.

Do not be too concerned with numbers. You pay doctors good money to worry about things like your age, height and weight. By dwelling on your age, your weight or if you're shrinking, you will miss out on important things in life, things that can keep you youthful.

During the aging process, it is important to eat a healthy diet. The diet should consist of fiber, whole grain, fruits and vegetables. Eating these foods will give your body the nutrients it needs. You should limit the amounts of cholesterol, saturated fat and trans fat that you consume.

As we age, our bodies decrease in hormone production, such as testosterone and estrogen. Your doctor may prescribe hormone replacement therapy drugs which can cause harmful side effects. As a result, they should be taken under a doctor's supervision only.

TIP! Make your home your own with personal touches. Sometimes we find ourselves living in less than ideal circumstances.

Ensure that your sleeping habits are in sync with the amount of sleep you need, based upon your age. Seven to nine hours of sleep every night will result in great hormonal balance. You'll feel more relaxed, and you'll enjoy many more health benefits. Lack of proper rest can lead to an imbalance in moods and decrease your ability to fully enjoy life.

Exercise a little bit more each day. When you get older you will need to be more active to stay strong. Walking every day for at least thirty minutes is a great way to start keeping your body healthy. Complement this with a few weight lifting workouts a couple of times a week. This is the best way to keep your body in top shape and live longer.

You must get plenty of calcium to help prevent osteoporosis. Milk, skim milk, yogurt, low-fat cheeses and broccoli are good sources of calcium. Also, be sure to take your calcium supplements. Women need approximately 1500 to 2000 mg per day after menopause and men after the age of 65.

TIP! Take the time to be grateful for the things that you have in your life. Each day before you get out of bed, stop and think about at least five things that you are thankful for.

Make your home feel like it is a part of you! As you age, you may find that you cannot stay in the place you thought you would be living in forever. If you find yourself in a new living arrangement, look for ways to surround yourself with the things that you love most.

Retirement can be a great time to do what you want to do and have the best time of your life. These suggestions will help you be healthier and live out the rest of your life as happy as you can be.
